SUMMARY:Building DV Awareness in Our Community with Project Be Free & Renton Police Department
DESCRIPTION:What is domestic violence? What are some trends we are seeing within our city and how can law enforcement and organizations within our city help if needed. Navigating a system within crisis can be difficult\, what as community members and small business owners can we do to help one another? Join Katya Wojick from Project Be Free and Sergeant John Awai from the Renton Police Dept for a candid conversation and training.\n\n\n\n \nKatya Wojcik is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor\, she obtained a Masters of Education degree in Community Counseling from Seattle University. She currently owns her private practice (A Place to Be Free PLLC) located here in Renton. She is an affiliate counselor of Northwest Family Life and is the Executive Director of Project Be Free. Being a survivor of Domestic Violence\, Katya is passionate about working with individuals and families affected by intergenerational trauma. In 2020\, while working in the community mental health field\, clients would often express difficulty with obtaining domestic violence resources. This information compelled her to co-found a nonprofit with her partner serving those affected by DV. Project Be Free through partnership with Renton Police Department has been providing crisis response and mental health type resources to individuals in the community during DV type law enforcement calls since April of 2022.\n\n \n\nKatya is the daughter of immigrant parents\, values multiculturalism\, diversity\, equity and social justice. Katya's mission is to help increase client's voices and develop tools for them to self-advocate. She believes when working together we can support individuals in increasing their resilience in order to not be defined by their trauma. "We can then help give individuals the opportunity to rewrite their story."
