The American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) class is designed to teach individuals how to perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a variety of settings. The course focuses on critical skills and knowledge necessary for both pre-hospital and in-facility environments. Key components include:
1. CPR and AED Use: Instructions on performing CPR on adults, children, and infants, and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
2. Rescue Breathing and Choking Relief: Techniques for providing effective ventilations and relieving choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner.
3. Team Dynamics: Training in multi-rescuer resuscitation and the importance of effective team dynamics during an emergency response.
4. Basic Life Support Skills: Emphasis on the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR, and basic life support skills.
The course is typically interactive, incorporating a mix of lectures, videos, and hands-on practice. It is suitable for healthcare professionals as well as individuals with no medical background who want to be prepared for an emergency. Successful completion often requires passing a skills test and a written exam, leading to a certification that is usually valid for two years.
