Job Description
Executive Director
Evergreen City Ballet (ECB), a non-profit ballet school, seeks to hire an Executive Director (ED). ECB is a ballet school with 180+ students and an annual budget of $750,000. It employs a full-time administrative and marketing staff and part-time teaching staff. ECB students perform several shows a year led by dancers in the performance division. Our shows consistently sell out and range from original works to long time favorites such as Nutcracker.
The Position
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for ECB’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. S/he will initially develop deep knowledge of field, core programs, operations, and work closely with the board on business plans. The ED will serve as Chief Executive for the entire organization.
Working closely with the Board and Artistic Director, the ED is responsible for the overall vision and mission, leadership and day-to-day management of ECB, including Board interface, community outreach, communication (internal and external), development (fundraising/marketing), internal management, oversight of programming and education and in general all external affairs.  The challenge of this opportunity is to lead and inspire ECB to attain its next level of excellence. The ED will be an inspiring leader within the organization and beyond the walls of ECB to advance the organization’s mission. The ED will spearhead fundraising and initiate strategic collaborations to strengthen ECB, and will continue to build support and partnerships within the broader Renton and Bellevue communities for the organization’s long-term success.
The ED is a consensus builder who works collaboratively with the Board to develop the overall strategy and policies for the organization. The ED supports the Board by keeping them informed of the internal and external issues affecting ECB. S/he works with the Board to attract and develop new Board members and other volunteers and ensures that they are motivated, engaged, and energized by their association with ECB. Experience in fundraising (cultivating and soliciting high net worth individuals, foundations, corporations, and government) and/or the personal skill set to be an effective fundraiser is essential. A strong marketing familiarity is also important.
The Executive Director will implement strategies to ensure organizational sustainability. This includes the ability to:
• Maximize contributed and earned revenue
• Expand marketing, communications, audience development and public image
• Establish a plan for annual fundraising within the first quarter
• Develop, oversee, monitor and report on ECB’s financial performance
• Guide the administration and operations of ECB
• Supervise a professional staff, which implements operations, fundraising, marketing and financial management in support of artistic and educational programs
• Oversee Artistic Director that supervises the artistic and teaching staff
 
 
 

Responsibilities
• Provide strong organizational leadership in partnership with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors
• Report directly to the Board of Directors
• Create and implement 3-year strategic and financial plans with Board oversite
• Maintain oversight of operations and budget
• Effectively represent ECB in successful relationships with donors, local government, corporations, foundations and the public
• Plan, direct and supervise the annual preparation of the operating budgets; develop budget plans and estimates; analyze the cost effectiveness of operations
• Establish and implement budgets and ongoing reporting to the Board of Directors
• Oversee development and implementation of marketing campaigns and fundraisers
• Hire, manage, mentor and motivate a full-time and part-time administrative and artistic staff to achieve success in daily operations
• Engage and manage relationships with board members to ensure success and growth
• Maintain organizational calendar of events and meetings
• Set goals for obtaining income and in-kind donations from foundations, sponsors, individual patrons and businesses
Leadership & Management
• Ensure ongoing excellence in all programs.  Continuously provide rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
• Actively engage and energize ECB’s volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders
• Develop, maintain, and support the Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio or designate a staff member for each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction
• Lead, coach, develop, and retain ECB’s high-performance staff
• Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents
• Oversee the production and roll-out of Annual Report to the families, community and donors
• Direct, manage and serve as staff director for all staff and teachers
• Work with all consultants including Board Liaison, grant writer, etc.
Fundraising & Communications
• Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion while simultaneously maintaining relationships with current donors
• Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
• Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities and teaching locations
• Set annual goals for fundraising events and work with marketing team to accomplish goals
• Plan and oversee the individual donor campaign
• Develop the strategy for cultivating, securing, and sustaining corporate sponsorships
• Secure sponsorships for upcoming season
• Identify and pursue new sources of contributed income—individuals, corporations, foundations/grants
• Oversee and direct the implementation of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software
Planning & New Business
• Design expansion and complete the strategic business planning process for the school into new markets for both teaching and performing
• Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with the funders, and political and community leaders at each expansion site
• Be an external presence that communicates the school’s performances and program(s) results with an emphasis on the successes ECB
Qualifications
The ED will be thoroughly committed to ECB’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, business, fundraising, development and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
• Bachelor’s degree, and/or advanced degree with at least 10 years of senior management and professional fundraising experience; track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operational zed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
• Background in the non-profit management (performing arts a plus)
• Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
• Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
• Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
• Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
• Knowledge of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) a plus
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and management and leadership experience
• Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
• Willingness to “pitch-in” and be available for any and other duties as needed
• Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
