About Us

SHADOW is dedicated to protecting wetland habitat in South King County through education, preservation, and restoration. To date, SHADOW has placed nearly 100 acres of wetland habitat under permanent protection, providing critical wildlife habitat and passage in a landscape rapidly losing its functioning wetlands and green spaces. The true gem of SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve is our very own SHADOW Lake Bog and half-mile boardwalk trail leading into the heart of it!

A 5000 year old peat bog, SHADOW Lake Bog is a fragile and ancient habitat that has been preserved for generations to discover and steward. Our boardwalk trail is open for self-guided tours daily from dawn until dusk - come take a walk through time!

We offer a variety of environmental education programs, guided natualist tours, volunteer opportunities, venue rentals, team-building service projects, ecologicial monitoring programs, and more. We offer ongoing and one-time opportunities in environmental education and recreation for groups of all ages. Practical skills can be learned in a hands-on workshop, field trips are offered for student and youth groups, expert lectures are presented, mission-oriented community gatherings are hosted, and customized adventures can be planned. Through important relationships with community partners, SHADOW engages and educates nearly 3,000 people every year. Over 1,000 are from students from local and regional schools. In addition to education, we work with volunteers of all ages to continue restoring SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve to healthy, viable habitat.
