The Legislative and Transportation committee supports chamber membership by advocating for sound business practices at state and local government levels. This includes, advocacy in Olympia, developing policy positions, legislation receptions, review referendums and initiatives, and help organize all legislation events of the Chamber.
The committee fulfills this by the following methods:
Chamber Day planning, attending and messaging to our elected officials
Another day in Olympia to advocate for small business issues given bills proposed, dropped and in process.
Ongoing bulletin messages on proposed legislation and tax impacts to business/our members.
Transportation presentations throughout the year on changes, tolling, etc., and communicate to members.
Work and develop policy positions with the South KC Coalition that speak to our member’s business needs. This requires ongoing communication with the coalition and business members.
Prioritized Renton Chamber legislative priorities and impact to business.
Legislative Reception to enable Chamber members to hear from incumbents and candidates.
Invite all individuals running for election to ask for Chamber endorsement. Given responses to that and interviews completed by the committee, recommend the committee’s decision to the board for their input/approval and then communication.
Review referendums, initiatives and local issues as appropriate for recommendation to the Board.
Sponsor the Legislative Reception in the fall to introduce candidates to local business.
